The Frontier Mickey Mantle team blanked Northampton, 2-0, to win its opener in the double-elimination Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League playoffs, Wednesday in South Deerfield.

Frontier scored both runs in the first inning.

Kyle Barnes had a leadoff single then stole second. Kevin Baumann drew a one-out walk before Tynan Creagh (hit) flied to center. The ball was dropped as Barnes scored the first run. Ben Zaranek walked with two outs to load the bases. Gehrig Brynda then walked to score the second run.

Tyler Baranowski struck out two and allowed five hits in the complete-game win.

Liam Flynn had two hits, while Louis DeJesus, Pete Sullivan and Marshall Ingram each had one hit for Northampton.

Matt Sullivan pitched a complete-game for Hamp.

Northampton had runners at first and second in the seventh inning with one out, but Frontier turned a double play with the final out at the plate to end the game.

Frontier will host Brattleboro at 5 p.m. Friday.

Mohawk 6, Hatfield 1 โ€” Hatfield trailed by two runs entering the seventh inning, but Mohawk added three in the final frame to eliminate the hosts from the Mickey Mantle playoffs, Wednesday at Smith Academy.

Griffin Smiarowski allowed six hits over 5โ…” innings in defeat.

Northampton 11, Hatfield 6 โ€” Northampton scored 11 runs on nine hits and four errors to win its opener in the PVYBL Mickey Mantle playoffs at Smith Academy on Tuesday.

Darrian DeJesus struck out nine in the complete-game win. He added two hits to help his cause. Louis DeJesus (double) had three hits and Casey Dawson doubled for Hamp.

Hatfield, which scored four runs in the first inning, had nine hits. Patrick Fitzgibbons had a three-run triple among his three hits. Smiarowski two hits.
