TURNERS FALLS — Welman Hernandez-Diaz, 35, of Worcester, died late Saturday morning in an apparent drowning in the Connecticut River around the Rock Dam in Turners Falls.

According to Northwestern district attorney’s office spokesperson Mary Carey, no foul play is suspected.

Hernandez-Diaz had been swimming with a group of people. At around 11:30 a.m., emergency services were called with a report that he had gone underwater.

Turners Falls Firefighter Trish Dana previously said the man, whom Montague police officers pulled from the water, was found unconscious and unresponsive. Hernandez-Diaz had been underwater for an estimated 10 minutes. CPR was attempted before he was brought to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

Carey confirmed late Monday afternoon that Hernandez-Diaz had died. She said the incident is still under investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the office of the chief medical examiner.
