■Smith College has begun construction of a three-unit campus Fine Arts Center, expected to be completed by fall, 1972. The center is being built on Elm Street between Smith’s main administration building, College Hall, and St. John’s Episcopal Church.

■Pfc. Gerald J. Sheehan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Sheehan Sr. of 17 Federal St., has graduated from clerk typist school at Fort Dix, N.J., and has been sent to the medical field service school, Brook Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, for six weeks where he will be trained as a medical record specialist. Sheehan is a 1965 graduate of Northampton High School.

■A campaign finally has started, after much discussion, to create a sculpture honoring Sojourner Truth. Members of the Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue Committee have launched both a national and local drive to raise $200,000 for the project.

■A slew of known and suspected environmental problems and a high sales price have stymied efforts to breathe new life into the Calvin Theater, a year after it closed. As another winter approaches, questions are being raised by real estate experts whether the building can be saved at all.
