■Four alumnae were recipients of a Smith College Medal this morning before an audience of nearly 2,000 students, alumnae and faculty. Given the medals were Mrs. Alan R. Siegel, Class of 1955, Mrs. Willard Wright, Class of 1935, Dorothy Dunning Chacko, M.D., Class of 1925, and Miss Ethel Zoe Bailey, Class of 1911.

■St. Michael’s High School has undergone a change in status from a parish high school to a regional diocesan high school. The reason for the change was to ensure the future of the school by developing a regional character and to ensure high-quality education of the student body.

■After a second consideration, the proposal to expand downtown Northampton was endorsed last night by the City Council. The plan, which has been approved by the Planning Board, adds several streets to the central business district and crates a vision of how the downtown should be expanded in future years.

■The Volunteers in Northampton Schools is planning a revue of song, dance, and humor that will raise money for the volunteer program. The entire cast, production crew and all committee members are people like teachers, school and city officials, police and businesspeople who donate their time and talent to the schools. The show is written and directed by Norinne Tiley.

■Northampton Superintendent Isabelina Rodriguez and Anthony Ryan, associate superintendent at Hampshire Regional School District are among three finalists for the Granby school superintendent post. Granby is in the midst of a search for a new schools chief to replace Patricia Stevens, who is retiring in December after more than eight years in the position.

■The day after an SUV came crashing through the storefront window of Off the Map Tattoo on Cottage Street in Easthampton, it was back to business as usual for employees, who said they were thankful no one was injured in the accident. The broken window, shattered Tuesday evening, was boarded up Wednesday, with the words “We’re open” spray-painted on it.
