It’s a good thing the UMass women’s basketball team can walk to its next game.
The last time the Minutewomen gathered, their bus was late. They arrived at Fairfield just in time and after a close first half, pulled away for their second win.
UMass (2-1) will gather at the Mullins Center on Tuesday (2 p.m., NESN) for both its home and Atlantic 10 Conference opener against Rhode Island. The game was rescheduled from Dec. 28. The Atlantic 10 made the announcement on Friday, just the latest adjustment in an ever-changing basketball season.
“We’re just taking things as they come, regardless if the bus is late and we get here 15 minutes before tipoff; great, we still have an opportunity to play,” UMass coach Tory Verdi said after beating Fairfield on Thursday. “I’m not going to worry about all those things. There is so much going on we just need to be resilient. For someone who likes to be proactive and control things, it’s really hard, but I’ve had to just let all that stuff go and just know that some things get canceled, because it’s inevitable, it’s going to happen. Just need to a figure out a solution to it, or make an adjustment or change. My motto is still win the day.”
The Minutewomen opened the season with a blowout of Bryant. They rallied twice against Boston College and had a chance to win at the end of regulation but a last-second shot missed. The Eagles ran away in overtime. Then came Thursday’s game against Fairfield. UMass outscored the Stags 43-28 in the second half to win by 21.
The Minutewomen have received production from across the floor in each game. Forward Sam Breen averages a team-high 23.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Sydney Taylor averages 21.0 points and is 12-for-27 (44 percent) from 3-point range.
Guard Destiney Philoxy (7.0 ppg) averages just over 8 assists per game, while guard Ber’Nyah Mayo spreads it around at 5.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.3 steals.
Forward Maddie Sims (7.7 ppg) is third on the team in scoring, while freshman forward Makennah White is third in rebounds (6.7) coming off the bench.
“We have a ton of depth in the front court and I like where we are,” Verdi said. “Our guards, we have the ability to play multiple guards and go smaller if we want to as well.”
That depth has come at a good time. Sophomore center Maeve Donnelly (concussion protocol) has missed the first three games. She is listed as day to day.
White had her first career double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) against Fairfield.
“Coach tells us every day the harder we work at practice, the more it will pay off in the games,” White said last week. “I just wanted to come in off the bench and contribute as much as possible. My teammates trusted me and gave me the ball inside.”
Rhode Island arrives at the Mullins Center at 0-2. The Rams opened with a 76-50 loss to Providence on Nov. 28 and a 70-69 loss at Penn State on Thursday.
Emmanuelle Tahane leads the team at 13.5 ppg, followed by Marie-Paule Foppossi (12.0) and Johanna Muzet (11.5). All three are from France. In fact, the Rams have six French players on the roster.
