NORTHAMPTON — The Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a phone scam.
Several residents in the Valley said they got calls from someone saying they were an employee of the Hampshire Sheriff’s Office and asking for money for court charges and requesting payment via gift cards, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The Hampshire Sheriff’s Office will never, never, call private citizens and demand payment or accept payment of any kind over the phone,” Sheriff Patrick Cahillane said in a statement Monday. “If you receive such a call, the best tactic is to simply hang up.”
