The silence is deafening. What does it mean when our leaders are silent in the face of undermining, self-serving presidential actions? What does presidential silence mean in the face of critical national issues, while cascades of tweets aimed at those deemed as disloyal to him flood airwaves?

On one level, the answers are clear, obvious: President Trump has been transparent about making money from being president. After all, he has been campaigning ever since his election. We know his playbook well: foment division, throw “bones” to supporters, blame others, exploit fears, spread misinformation. Why acknowledge President-elect Biden when Trump can make money for his PAC through fundraising for his “legal fund”? Why not bring the country down with you, while lining your own coffers? Yes, we know the playbook well. Just follow the money.

On another level, answers to the question of silence are not at all clear. Why are so many leaders silent, deferring to the president, not pushing through desperately needed economic relief? Why so quiet on national security breaches and threats of violence against local officials (their children and family members) working to ensure voter count accuracy, or advocating for mask wearing? The list of silences goes on. Is it a strategic plan to bring down the next administration? Privilege over the public good in action? Cowardice? Self-serving power mongering? A manipulative nod and wink to supporters and conspiracy theories?

Sobering realities and issues critical to our survival and well-being stand before us. They are not red or blue, but universal in their impact, and require action as a nation and member of the global community, economic and rapidly changing ecosystems. My wish for the new year is just us: our voices, our actions, our civic engagement and investment in the future of our children and grandchildren — us. We all have a role to play. Divided we just cannot stand. I am so grateful to our local, state and federal representatives for their leadership and integrity, on our behalf and to everyone working for the greater good.
