■William M. Sullivan, who at 26 is reportedly the youngest man ever to be elected to the Board of Selectmen in Easthampton, was sworn into that office this morning by Town Clerk Frank J. Janik. Upsetting incumbent Robert Partridge by an 809-vote margin, Sullivan stated that he was completely overjoyed at the victory.

■Attorneys John C. O’Donnell of 21 Middle St., Northampton, and Lawrence E. Rothstein of 60 Main St., Amherst, were admitted to the Federal Bar yesterday in Federal Court by Judge Andrew A. Caffrey.

■Postal inspectors have removed stamp vending machines from the Northampton Post Office and its substations in Florence and at Smith College to conduct a financial audit. The probe began after the service determined that accounts weren’t adding up.

■After gathering in front of City Hall to hear proclamations celebrating International Women’s Day Friday evening, about 20 people walked to First Churches for a brief candlelight ceremony and a slate of performances. Eventually, over 60 people showed up to watch dancing, and listen to songs honoring women and their push for equal rights.

■Backed by a five-year federal grant, the Northampton Prevention Coalition is stepping up efforts to curb abuse of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs among city youth. The coalition also seeks to debunk the notion that a majority of parents don’t pay attention to their children’s sobriety.

■The Union Station restaurant, once a train depot dating back to 1896, has closed its doors. Owner Matthew Pitoniak said, “The economy is driving most of it, especially the last couple of months, but the business has been in a bit of a decline for a while now.”
