GOSHEN — A free meal program launched by the Council on Aging last Thanksgiving will continue through at least May, according to organizers.

This month’s meal, served to 59 seniors March 9, included a St. Patrick’s Day-themed corned beef and cabbage dinner, while in February the COA provided a Valentine’s Day meal. The meals for both distributions were cooked by Spruce Corner Restaurant, with dessert from Red’s Bakery. People pick up the drive-up meals at Town Hall.

“It was very well received,” Evelyn Culver, director of the Council on Aging, said.

Henrietta Munroe, another COA member, said that seniors are appreciative of the meals program, which was launched in November. Prior to the pandemic, the COA held monthly meals at Town Hall for seniors.

Spruce Corner Restaurant and Red’s Bakery are being reimbursed for the food they provide. Spruce Corner owner Jerry Bird said he’s happy to hear the seniors are enjoying the meals.

“I appreciate that they’re giving me the opportunity to help out the community,” said Bird, of the COA.

The next meal will be distributed on April 13, and people will be able to choose between stuffed chicken and ham dinners. Goshen residents 60 and over are eligible for the meals, although Culver said there will be a cap of 60 people. Those who want to register can call Culver at 413-268-3316.

Culver also said that the COA is planning on having a May meal.
