■Starting tomorrow the Daily Hampshire Gazette will begin running the column, “At Wit’s End,” by Erma Bombeck. Erma is Mrs. Every Housewife, and her hang-ups putdowns, runarounds, highs and lows make for delightful reading. Your reaction is bound to be, “I’ve been there once or twice.”

■A Northampton youth will take a 20-day trip to Japan and camp at Asagiri Heights west of Mt. Fujiyama when he attends the World Jamboree of Boy Scouts this August. James Camposeo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Camposeo of 53 Revell Ave., was selected as one of four area Scouts to represent the Great Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, at the jamboree.

■A University of Massachusetts professor of Spanish is one of only 34 people nationwide selected for a fellowship program that trains participants for careers as administrators in higher education. F. Javier Cevallos, faculty adviser to the provost, will participate in the American Council on Education Fellows program for next year.

■Jason Langdon and Thomas Wheeler, longtime friends, recently became Eagle Scouts with Troop 110. Scoutmaster Robert Dionne said only 2 percent of all Scouts make Eagle because, sometime around age 13, they start getting distracted by jobs, sports and girls.

■The Easthampton City Council is expected to accept the retirement of longtime City Auditor Joanne Slattery at its meeting on Wednesday. Slattery has worked for the city for nearly 41 years and plans to officially retire Aug. 31.

■Two Northampton High School students will be honored at the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast Thursday as recipients of the Northampton St. Patrick’s Association annual $1,000 college scholarships. Jackson Scott Findlay, 17, will be awarded the Joan Tobin Citizenship Award, and Johanna M. Fleming, 19 will receive the William F. O’Connor Shanachie Award.
