HOLYOKE – A 69-year-old Holyoke woman, who police say was driving the wrong-way on Route 91 northbound, died after she collided head on with another vehicle Saturday around noon in Holyoke, according to Massachusetts State Police.

State Troopers from the Northampton barracks responded to the crash that also seriously injured a 25-year-old Springfield man who was taken to Baystate Medical Center. The operator who police say was driving the wrong way died at the scene, according to State Police.

A preliminary investigation found that the woman was driving a 2005 Mercedes-Benz and traveling southbound on the northbound side of Route 91. The Mercedes struck a 2013 Honda Civic head on in the left lane of Route 91 northbound.

State police said the circumstances of the crash, including the reason for the wrong-way operation, remain under investigation by Troop B of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
