DEERFIELD — Monday’s election will involve one contested race that sees five candidates vying for three seats on the Planning Board.
Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.
In the race for Planning Board, Mark Brennan Jr., Andrea Leibson and Kathleen Sylvester are challenging incumbents Max Antes Jr. and Rachel Blain.
Brennan — who said he is passionate about protecting the rural character of Deerfield, while also “allowing for healthy economic development” — currently serves on the Capital Improvements Planning Committee and works as the director of development operations at a software company.
“I have previous experience building and managing engineering teams and consulting for small business, enterprises, governments and nonprofits,” he said. “As a result, I have learned how to analyze complex issues and navigate fault lines of competing interests.”
Leibson, who recently retired as executive director of the Franklin County Community Meals Program, said she is running for a seat on the board as a way of doing her part for the community.
“I’ve lived in town for 35 years, and I care about it,” said Leibson, whose career centered on nonprofit administration. “I care that farmland, conservation land, residential land is maintained and protected. I also care deeply about things the municipality has to pay for — like roads and the library and the school — so I know you need to have businesses and development as well.”
Sylvester, a resident of Franklin County for 44 years, is a family nurse practitioner. According to her candidate statement, she has experience working in groups to resolve conflict, she “values the quality of life a small town brings,” and she understands the planning needed to build a community where everyone can thrive.
“I have been of service to people throughout my life and am seeking this post as an opportunity to give back to my town and to be involved in the planning of Deerfield’s future,” she wrote.
In her candidate statement, incumbent Blain wrote that during her tenure with the Planning Board, she has helped review a series of commercial projects, solar projects, zoning bylaws and residential concerns. She hopes to continue in this capacity, bringing to the meetings “all that I have learned about Deerfield and the people who call it home.”
Antes, who is also running as an incumbent, said he brings to the Planning Board a lifetime of experience living in Deerfield. In addition to working in construction, he was enlisted in the Marine Corps for four years.
“My work has allowed me to gain a great deal of experience with heavy highway and building construction,” Antes said in a statement. “Project plans and specifications as well as the various codes and regulations have been a part of my professional life. Protecting Deerfield’s interests with a wealth of practical experience has been my greatest contribution to the Planning Board.”
The remaining candidates on Monday’s ballot who are running unopposed are:
■Selectboard, three-year term — Carolyn Shores Ness (incumbent)
■Deerfield School Committee, two seats with three-year terms — Erica Jacob and Mary Ramon (incumbent)
