■To Delinquents! We are under the necessity of calling upon those of our subscribers who have been delinquent for several years past to make immediate settlement. This call cannot be deemed unreasonable by those who have been indebted to this establishment for papers, advertising, etc., from one to four years!
■On the 12th inst., a son of Mr. Oliver Phelps of West Springfield, aged 15, was drowned at the edge of Westfield. While fishing for lamprey eels, he slipped from the rock on which he stood, and which was at a distance from the shore, and went to the bottom.
■Today was the anniversary of the feast of St. Jean Baptiste, the patron saint of Canada, and was observed by the French people of the city. This evening all the French societies of the city will hold a whist party at Sacred Heart Hall.
■The public school for tutoring children in their studies is to open on July 5th for a season of six weeks, closing on August 12th. Principal John Hart of the Hawley Grammar School is to have charge and be assisted by several of the public schoolteachers and all classes will be held in the Hawley grammar school building.
■One thing about Whately, when there is something going on in town, folks usually turn out to see what it is. At least 300 local people followed the “town crier” through the dark to witness scenes from Whately’s past and hear the historical narrative during last night’s pageant.
■Pete Seeger, famed folk singer, entertained the 485 boys attending Boys State at University of Massachusetts. Seeger visited the Boys State activities going on a short distance from the International Symposium on River Ecology which he is attending this week, also at UMass.
