NORTHAMPTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be speaking at Smith College in September.

Pelosi, the second highest-ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government, also will be awarded an honorary degree by Smith College President Kathleen McCartney, which she was due to receive at the college’s 2020 commencement ceremony. As House speaker, she is third in line to the presidency, behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

Pelosi’s talk will take place on Sept. 8 in John M. Greene Hall at 8 p.m. and is part of the college’s Presidential Colloquium Series, which annually brings an array of “influential thought leaders” to share their experiences and spark conversation on pressing social, political and global matters, according to the college. The three-term House speaker will be the first presenter in Smith’s “Year on Democracies” themed initiative, which will survey the meaning of democracy worldwide.

The talk, along with all other events in the series, is free and open to the public, although tickets are required. Additional information regarding tickets will be released closer to the date of the event. In addition, Pelosi’s talk will be livestreamed and available to view through Smith’s Facebook page. Complete details about the Presidential Colloquium as well as the democracy initiative will be forthcoming later this summer. For the most up-to-date information, visit smith.edu/news.
