AMHERST — A rental truck being driven on South East Street sustained significant damage to its roof and sides after failing to clear the railroad underpass Thursday afternoon, according to police.
The U-Haul truck got wedged below the bridge near the intersection with Stanley Street around 3:57 p.m. The truck was removed by a tow truck about 90 minutes later.
Railroad officials stopped any trains from using the bridge and checked its integrity following the incident, police said.
A sign near the bridge warns drivers that the clearance is only 10 feet. The driver told police he was using a GPS while moving to town and was unaware of the low bridge.
