■Judith Hubley of Pynchon Meadow has announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for trustee of Forbes Library in the city primaries on Sept. 14. Ms. Hubley is editor of “The Curious Naturalist,” a monthly Audubon magazine for beginning naturalists and has been a substitute teacher in science and English in the local junior and senior high schools.

■Frank J. Kosier III, 12, Northampton’s local Soap Box Derby champion, will compete with 266 youngsters Saturday in the 34th All-American Soap Box Derby International Finals in Akron, Ohio. Among this year’s entries are five girls. This is the first time in derby history that girls have been allowed to compete.

■With crowds apparently at an all-time high and good weather bolstering spirits and appetites alike, the sixth annual Taste of Northampton ended on an upbeat note Sunday evening. “It was a smashing success,” said Suzanne Beck, the executive director of the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce.

■The words of God and people were in sync yesterday at a reunion service for the Methodist youths — now adults — who gathered at a Laurel Park summer camp 45 years ago. More than 100 people turned out for the service, including 58 former summer campers, hailing from eight states.

■Former Mount Holyoke president Joanne V. Creighton has accepted a one-year position as interim president at Haverford College in Pennsylvania. Creighton will hold the office while the college searches for its 14th president, a process that will take place in the coming year.

■As of the Tuesday deadline the only registered contenders in the election for a new mayor of Northampton are Michael R. Bardsley and David J. Narkewicz, although additional candidates could still mount write-in campaigns. Bardsley and Narkewicz both announced their candidacies in March.
