■Robert A. Young announced today that he will seek the Democratic nomination for the position of trustee of the Smith Vocational High School. Young has worked as language and history teacher at Hawley Junior High School, and as a guidance counselor at Hawley, John F. Kennedy, and Northampton High School. He is currently serving as principal of the Vernon Street School.
■War games commence at 10-hundred hours tomorrow on a large field behind the Florence National Guard Armory. This time, they’ll be in Technicolor. For the first time, Company B of the 101st Engineer Battalion of the National Guard will engage in infantry tactical training using paint balls.
■With three weeks remaining before the start of school, work on the original JFK Middle School building is 94 percent complete. Officials guarantee the school will be ready Sept. 4 to receive some 250 students each in Grades 6, 7, and 8.
■Today, mayoral candidate David J. Narkewicz will be pedaling his campaign message around the city on his bike, towing a red, white and blue trailer accessorized with a tabletop and red beach umbrella. “I’m committed to reaching out to voters across the city, and this rolling office is one more way to bring my campaign to the neighborhoods in a way that’s green, healthy and fun,” Narkewicz said in a statement.
■Movie lovers are uniting today in an event sponsored by the Friends of Forbes to rustle up cash in the ongoing effort to get DVDs from the former Pleasant Street Video onto the library’s shelves. The “Moving the Movies to Forbes” fundraiser will be held in the former Dynamite Records space in the basement at Thornes Marketplace. It will be followed by a walking tour of movie hot spots in the city.
