Get ready to see Peter Carey on your television next year.
The former Frontier and current Northfield Mount Hermon star had a multitude of Div. 1 basketball programs after him, but on Tuesday announced on Twitter he had committed to play at Syracuse next season.
“Being done with the whole recruiting process is a big stress off my shoulders,” Carey said. “Syracuse is a great fit for me. I like it basketball wise and academically. It’s just the perfect fit for me.
Carey chose the Orange over Penn, Brown, Bryant, Albany, St. Bonaventure, UMass, Iona and Rutgers, who had all offered the 7-foot center a scholarship before his senior season.
He took a visit to Syracuse last weekend, all but confirming it was where he wanted to go.
“I knew before I went on the visit that I wanted to go there but it was more reassurance,” Carey said. “It helped confirm that Syracuse would be the best fit for me.”
Carey got to meet with longtime Orange coach Jim Boeheim on his visit. Boeheim, who runs a 2-3 zone defensively, knows exactly how he’ll use the lengthy Carey on both ends of the court.
“He let me get a feel offensively and defensively for how I’d be utilized in the system,” Carey said. “I was debating Rutgers as well or just waiting to see what offers I could get during the season but after thinking about it there was no school in the country that would have been a better fit for me than Syracuse. Once I realized that, it was an easy decision.”
While Carey is eager to get to Syracuse next year, he’s also excited about the upcoming season at NMH. The Hoggers have a deep and talented team, and after not having a season last year, are anxious to begin playing games again.
“I know at NMH, we’ll have an incredible season this year,” Carey said. “Our team is special this year. I’ll focus on this season and can’t wait for it.”
