AMHERST — The University of Massachusetts placed its campus on lockdown Tuesday afternoon because of a person on campus threatening to harm himself — somebody initially described as a “hostile armed person” in an emergency alert sent to campus.
In an email to campus, the UMass Police Department said that a person threatening self-harm drove onto campus near University Health Services, where campus and town police “brought him into custody without incident” around 12:47 p.m.
“No one was injured and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” the email said. “A handgun and ammunition were found inside the individual’s vehicle. He has been transported to an area hospital. The person is not a student, staff or faculty member at UMass Amherst.”
The incident led campus police to issue an alert to shelter in place and stay indoors at 12:40 p.m., describing the incident as a “hostile armed person” on campus. Soon after, a second alert was sent notifying campus that the person was in custody and that they could resume normal activities.
“All clear,” the message read.
