For the second game in a row, the freshman delivered.
UMass defenseman Scott Morrow scored the game’s only goal 6 minutes, 25 seconds in against Providence on Friday at the Mullins Center, and the Minutemen prevailed 1-0 against the seventh-ranked Friars.
Cam Donaldson fed him the pass from behind the net, and Morrow skated wide open between the circles. Providence goalie Jaxson Stauber, who had 25 saves in the game, never had a chance over his left shoulder. Lucas Mercuri received a secondary assist on the play.
UMass goalie Matt Murray turned away 28 shots for his first shutout of the season. It was the 12th shutout of his career.
The Minutemen earned the game’s only power play on a hooking call against Parker Ford with 4:05 remaining.
UMass (5-2, 3-0 Hockey East) has now won five games in a row. The teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Saturday in Providence at Schneider Arena.
