HOLYOKE — Emergency responders transported a man to the hospital Friday after he was shot in the back multiple times on West Franklin Street.

In a press release Saturday, police Capt. Matthew Moriarty said police responded to the Racing Mart store at 181 West Franklin St. on Friday at 6 p.m. for a report of shots fired. An officer began to give the victim first aid while another attempted to track the suspect with a police dog.

Police found a discarded firearm at the scene, Moriarty said, but no suspect has yet been arrested.

“The victim had been shot in the back multiple times,” Moriarty wrote. “Numerous spent shell casing were recovered and the area was processed for further evidence.”

Moriarty said the victim’s condition was unknown. Police could not be reached Sunday for more information about the incident and the victim’s status.
