SOUTH DEERFIELD — The Frontier boys basketball team got to see the talented Drury duo of Benjamin Moulton and Louis Guillotte up close on Monday.

The two Blue Devil stars presented problems for the Redhawks defense all night long. Moulton consistently knocked down shots from the outside while Guillotte feasted in the paint.

Moulton finished with 33 points and Guillotte added 25 points as Drury raced past Frontier, 74-49, at Goodnow Gymasium.

“Drury is who we knew they’d be; hard nosed, disciplined, physical,” Redhawks coach Ben Barshefsky said. “They run good sets and they can hurt you at every position. They have a solid big inside [Timothy Brazeau] who does really well sealing guys and opening up to the ball. Louis has such exceptional body control going to the basket and Moulton, you leave him open and he’s going to hit it. You almost have to pick your poison against them.”

The loss was the first of the season for Frontier (3-1). Barshefsky said he hopes his team can learn and grow from the defeat.

“We’ve been making mistakes in every game up to this point,” Barshefsky said. “Drury exposed them tonight. We see the level we need to get to. They were the better team than us tonight.”

It was all Iain Spearance for the Redhawks in the opening eight minutes. The senior scored 12 of Frontier’s 16 points in the first quarter, getting into the lane and finishing while also doing a good job collecting offensive rebounds. At the end of eight minutes, the Redhawks trailed just 20-16.

It was a 3-point barrage from both teams to open the second quarter. Moulton knocked one down from deep before Dylan Martin drained one from downtown for Frontier.

Dante Ruggiano and Sam Schreiber followed it up with 3’s of their own and suddenly the Redhawks held a 25-23 lead. It would be their last advantage of the game however.

Moulton hit back-to-back shots from 3-point land and Zachary Davignon followed with one of his own to give Drury a 32-25 lead. That was the final three of the quarter, as the Blue Devils carried a 37-28 lead into the half.

Moulton and Guillotte took things over in the third quarter. Guillotte opened the quarter with a bucket inside before Moulton scored the next 11 Drury points.

Baskets from Patrick Boyden and Matthew Sicard, and six points from Tyler Dubreuil kept the Redhawks alive, but the Blue Devils closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run, six points coming from Guillotte, to give Drury a 58-39 lead going into the fourth quarter.

“At times when we were playing fast, we did some good things,” Barshefsky said. “To Drury’s credit, they sped us up a few times and we were taking contested jump shots or not faking a pass before making a pass. The end result was a 25-point loss.”

A 5-0 Frontier run to open the final frame cut the Blue Devil lead to 58-44 but Guillotte scored nine points to close out the quarter, scoring the final seven points of the contest to put the game away.

One of the issues for Frontier was on the glass, where Drury’s size gave it problems throughout.

“Defensively since we are a smaller team, we have to start bodying teams up before they get in the lane,” Barshefsky said. “We have to be physical with all cuts in the lane. As soon as the shot goes out, we need to box out then get the rebound. At times we did that and it helped us but other times we just looked for the ball and it turned into offensive rebounds for them.”

Frontier is back in action Thursday, going on the road to take on Granby in an interesting independent matchup.

Hopkins 80, Mahar 49 — The Golden Hawk backcourt of Andrew Ciaglo and Colin Earle got the job done for Hopkins, with Ciaglo scoring 28 points and Earle adding 18 to lead the Golden Hawks to an 80-49 win in Hadley on Monday.

Hopkins led 16-7 after one and took a 33-22 lead into the half before exploding for 22 third-quarter points to pull ahead 55-37 going into the fourth.

Hunter Martin led the Senators with 12 points. Will Barnes tallied 10 points and Cole Johnson and Cathal Davis each had eight points in the loss.
