DEERFIELD — As Town Clerk/Treasurer/Collector Barbara Hancock submits her resignation to take a position elsewhere, the town now has to figure out what to do with the combined position, which is one of only two in the state.
The Select Board voted to “regretfully accept” Hancock’s resignation Wednesday, and named Sarah Kimball as the interim treasurer/collector and Jennifer Wallace as the interim town clerk while providing them with a biweekly stipend that will be decided next week.
“Barbara has done an excellent job for the town of Deerfield over the last couple of years,” said Select Board Chairman David Wolfram. “It’s a shame to lose her.”
Hancock submitted her resignation to the board Dec. 22, and will work through Jan. 7 to see the real estate collections through their due date while also training Kimball and Wallace on their new responsibilities.
“I have been very fortunate to have worked with and for an amazing supportive Select Board,” Hancock wrote. “I am immensely appreciative of the respect and latitude you all have shown me.”
In a phone call, Hancock decline to comment on where she will be working next.
Town Administrator Kayce Warren and the board agreed to wait until next week to vote on the stipend for Kimball and Wallace as they determine what additional duties will need to be picked up.
“It’s outside the normal expectation of work and certainly adds to the workload in the office,” Warren said. “If you’re not going to make a decision tonight then make it next week.”
Select Board member Trevor McDaniel agreed, noting they just need to parse out the duties of each role so they can “pay them accordingly.”
“That has to be done. We just have to settle on a figure,” McDaniel said. “They’ve been trained very well.”
Warren also suggested the town move to split the town clerk/treasurer/collector position into two because of the overwhelming responsibilities it currently requires, but that split “can’t happen right away.” She added the “very unique” role will make it difficult to hire a replacement.
“It’s untenable. It’s too much work,” Warren said. “My suggestion is to split the position to town clerk and treasurer/collector. … There’s two positions in the state and this is one of them.”
