■Died, in Goshen, on the 13th inst., Mrs. Sophia, consort of Capt. Reuben Dresser, aged 41. The death of Mr. Dresser was sudden. The family left her, a few moments before, sitting in her chair and tending her infant. A heavy groan summoned them to her apartment, where they found she had succeeded in reaching her bed but was in the last agonies of death.
■Orange Wright has again opened his market cellar in the Row, for the accommodation of his customers, where he proposes to keep constantly for sale fresh meats of every description which this part of the country affords. Also, pickled beef, pork, dried beef, and hams, all of the first quality.
■The public schools of the city opened today after the Christmas vacation with a full attendance in all the grades. The different school buildings were warm this morning, despite the zero weather, and it was necessary to close only one or two rooms in the high school because of the cold.
■Six canvassers are going through the city making the annual birth canvass, preparatory to presenting statistics for the city clerk’s annual report.
■Miss Natalie Cole, daughter of the late singer, Nat King Cole, will be featured entertainer at Northampton’s inaugural ball Monday evening. Miss Cole’s program will include such hits as “People” and “Walk On By,” plus some of the songs her father made famous. She will be accompanied by Rick Armani at the piano.
■“Unless something really big changes,” M. Stebbins Howes, Cummington Selectman for 19 years, will not seek re-election in February. Instead, Howes says, he intends to spend more time on his dairy farm. Being a Selectman takes a lot more time than it used to. “We have so much more work to do — with zoning and things like that,” he says.
