AMHERST — Reconstruction of a section of Route 9 from Amherst center to University Drive begins Monday with preliminary work, including installation of silt fences and putting protections around trees.

Crews with Caracas Construction Corp. of Ludlow are starting the $5.9 million project at 7 a.m. and will be on the road daily until 5 p.m.

During the first week, workers will do project layout and put in fences, with the digging of test pits and water main work later in March.

The project, which eventually will involve the excavation, milling and paving of the road, adding pedestrian ramps and new granite curbing, and putting in new traffic signals, signs and pavement markings, is to be complete by April 2024.
