NORTHAMPTON — The man charged with murder in connection to a downtown shooting in December will be arraigned later this month after his court date on Monday was postponed.

Steven J. Malloy, 32, is now due in Hampshire Superior Court on Tuesday, March 29, at 2 p.m., according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

On Monday, prosecutors said Malloy filed a motion to replace Nicholas Horgan as his defense attorney, leading to the delay. Malloy was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday at 10 a.m. on charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm in the Dec. 1 shooting death of Joseph Fillio, 39, of Pittsfield.

Fillio was found dead at 2 Randolph Place with a gunshot wound to the head and police arrested Malloy near West Street after a brief search. Prosecutors have not revealed the alleged motive for the crime or any relationship between Malloy and Fillio.

Court records list Malloy’s address as the streets of Northampton. He had already pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in Northampton District Court when a Hampshire County grand jury indicted him earlier this month and moved the case to Hampshire Superior Court.

Fillio’s shooting was the only homicide recorded in Hampshire County in 2021.
