The Amherst softball team blew out Commerce, 17-0, in a contest that went just five innings on a chilly Thursday afternoon.
Hurricanes pitcher Sofia Holden pitched all five innings for the winning squad, collecting 13 strikeouts. At the plate, she smacked a home run and two RBIs, going 3-for-4 and stealing a base.
Catcher Maria Konieczny went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a double and three RBIs.
Longmeadow 11, Northampton 2 – Longmeadow held the Blue Devils to just two runs in a dominant performance on Thursday.
Northampton pitcher Kaliya Valentin threw 10 strikeouts and allowed just one walk in the loss. At the plate, Ella Pelis doubled for Northampton, and Molly Allen went 2-for-3 against Longmeadow pitcher Livia Kelly, scoring one of the Blue Devils’ two runs.
Greenfield 3, Frontier 1 – Frontier’s Sam Baker and Sydney Scanlon beat Greenfield’s Rory Crownen-Townsend and Kaitlyn Phillips 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles match for the Redhawks’ long point of the rain-shortened match on Thursday in Greenfield.
The No. 2 doubles match wasn’t contested due to rain. Greenfield swept the singles.
West Springfield 22, Belchertown 7 – Brady Moreau scored a trio of goals and added an assist for the Orioles in their 22-7 loss to West Springfield.
Nico St. George added five points (2G, 3A) in the defeat.
Agawam 14, Northampton 8 – Netminder Daniel Huntminder made 16 saves for the Blue Devils in the team’s first loss of the season, dropping them to 1-1.
Connor Tobin led Northampton on offense, notching five goals and an assist in the defeat. Jack Oravec provided secondary scoring with two tallies of his own.
Chicopee Comp 18, Amherst 1 – Robbie McAllister scored the Hurricanes lone goal in a defeat against Chicopee Comp on Thursday afternoon.
Amherst goalie Max Frenette made 18 saves in net.
South Hadley 13, Pope Francis 10 – Olivia Marion led South Hadley in goal-scoring in a group-effort win from the Tigers. Marion posted five points (4G, 1A) while teammates Meghan Carey, Caitlin Dean and Raquel Losty each scored twice; Carey also dished out four assists for a team-high six points.
Gabi Moroney also served as a playmaker for the Tigers, collecting four assists in addition to one goal.
Granby 3, Duggan 0 – Michael Swanigan compiled 10 kills and six aces, as the Rams won 25-16, 25-16, 27-25 at home.
Jake Gagnon distributed 13 assists with five aces and a block. Hao Pham had three kills and two blocks.
Brandon Chatel added there kills and a block, while seventh grader Nathan Walsh fired three aces.
Holyoke 3, SICS 0 – Jairam Rodriguez put together an all-around effort in a straight sets win over SICS. Rodriguez led the team with seven kills and 15 digs, also dishing out 12 assists.
Willie Lopez put up five kills and 10 assists, and Jomar Colon fired four kills and amassed eight digs. Jeduar Colon posted three blocks and five kills.
Adrian Centero-Feliciano finished two blocks and two kills. Joseph Albino had nine digs and two kills.
Frontier 3, East Longmeadow 2 — The Spartans didn’t make things easy for the Redhawks in their home opener at Goodnow Gymnasium.
Frontier earned 25-18, 25-20 set wins to take a 2-0 lead but East Longmeadow rallied to take the third set, 25-21, and then won the fourth set, 25-15, to force a fifth set.
With the game tied 12-12, Frontier scored the final three points to hold on for a 3-2 victory.
