Nathan Kelleher-Mochak struck out seven batters in six innings of work as the Northampton baseball team cruised to a 15-1 win over Holyoke on Thursday at Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke.
The win put Northampton back over the .500 mark at 4-3 on the season.
Kelleher-Mochak also led Northampton in the batter’s box, going 3-for-4 and scoring three runs. Marty Maslowski matched Kelleher-Mochak with three hits of his own, scoring once.
Trey Rios, Jackson Kelleher-Mochak, Brady McDonald, and Dominic Badorini added two runs apiece. Ryan Crowther and Jackson Kelleher-Mochak each recorded three RBIs.
South Hadley 9, Monson 1 — Brady Mendoza picked up three hits, including two doubles, in South Hadley’s dominant win over Monson.
Tyler Evans and Aiden Sullivan added two hits apiece in the victory. John Gauthier notched three RBIs for the Tigers.
Winning pitcher John Viola threw six innings for South Hadley, striking out four and allowing four hits.
Easthampton 6, Hampshire 5 – Despite a late comeback effort by Hampshire in the sixth inning, the Eagles were able to fend off the Raiders in a tight contest on Thursday.
Easthampton jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first, but the Raiders closed the gap to 5-3 after three innings, collecting a run in both the second and third to inch back into the game; the Eagles also scored in the second to pad their lead. A run in the fourth for Easthampton proved to be the game-winner, despite a two-run comeback attempt in the top of the sixth from Hampshire.
Nick Lloyd and Justin Colpack each notched two hits to lead the offensive charge for the Eagles. Teammate Michael Thompson scored twice and added a double in the win.
Eagles’ pitcher Andrew Thompson earned the win, throwing three innings and allowing four hits and three runs while striking out three batters. Relief pitcher Justin Colpack struck out three and allowed two hits in 2.2 innings of work, while Nick Jolicoeur threw 1.3 innings, also striking out three at the plate.
Ed Przybyla doubled twice for the Raiders. Hampshire’s Justin Meunier drove in two runs with a double. Luke Gaida doubled with an RBI and scored two runs.
Hopkins Academy 13, Athol 4 – Liam Flynn earned his first varsity win in his first varsity start, striking out eight over six innings for the Golden Hawks.
Hopkins Academy’s Andrew Ciaglo (double), eighth grader Chace Earle and Cooper Beckwith (walk) each had two hits.
Dom Aloisi singled and laid down two sacrifice bunts – including a squeeze play — for Hopkins Academy (2-4), which broke a four-game losing streak with a season-high scoring output.
Monument Mountain 5, Belchertown 1 – Belchertown scored once in the opening inning and couldn’t get back around the bases against Monument Mountain on Thursday.
Eli Sayball-Wimmer and Matthew Tilton got a hit apiece. Joey Mankowsky scored the Orioles only run.
Pitcher Brady Perkins threw 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and striking out one batter while walking six.
Frontier 1, Greenfield 0 — It was a pitcher’s duel in Greenfield on Thursday.
The Redhawks were unable to tally a hit off David Carey, but Dylan Martin was able to score on a passed ball in the third inning to give Frontier the lead.
The one run was all it needed with Tyler Baranowski on the mound. The senior went the distance, striking out six, giving up just four hits and not surrendering a run with the Redhawks coming away with a 1-0 Hampshire League West win.
“Baranowski and Carey is a matchup we anticipate every time we get together,” Frontier coach Chris Williams said. “We knew it was going to be low scoring. My hat goes off to Carey, he threw an absolute gem. He was mixing his pitches well, freezing guys on curveballs. Tremendous game on his part. You have to give Tyler credit, too. He knew what the stakes were. He knew his offense wasn’t there for him today and he wasn’t going to get that help. He bucked up and got it done for us on the hill.”
Granby 10, Ware 5 — Ryan Gaughan went 3-for-3, as the Rams won a Western Massachusetts semifinal rematch at home.
Michael Toth homered for Granby (5-0).
Gateway 16, Putnam 0 – Gateway pitcher Angela Magyar threw a no-hitter against Putnam on Thursday. Magyar struck out 11 batters and walked two in the victory.
Magyar also went 2-for-2 at the plate, blasting two doubles for Gateway, scoring three times and driving in two RBIs. Alexi Bonenfant notched two hits for the Gators and scored once. Nicole Hannigan, Olivia Kanner and Sawyer Wilkinson all scored twice.
Mt. Greylock 13, Frontier 8 — The visiting Mounties smacked three home runs, including a first-inning shot from pitcher Kami Sweet in the top of the first inning en route to a 13-8 Franklin County League West victory at Zabek Field in South Deerfield on Thursday.
The Redhawks received a home run of their own from Ashley Taylor in the seventh inning, and she finished with a two-hit outing. Makayla Santos was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored for Frontier (2-6, 0-3), while Sophia Pinardi and Skyler Steele each had two hits apiece. Delaney Fifield drove in three runs for the hosts.
Taylor struck out four in the circle for the Hawks.
Belchertown 18, Granby 6 – It took just five innings for Belchertown to knock out Granby, 18-6, on Thursday.
Junior Lindsey Chrabascz was the winning pitcher for the Orioles, allowing nine hits in five innings of work.
Leadoff hitter Laura Cote scored a team-high four runs and also notched two hits and an RBI. Five other players also picked up two hits apiece – Gina Camerota, Eliza Rothstein, Olivia Lafayette, Chrabascz and Aidenn Rose. Ross, Chrabascz and Vivian Ross all secured a triple in the win.
Agawam 8, Belchertown 3 – Belchertown goalie Dax Morin made 17 saves in the Orioles’ loss to Agawam on Thursday.
Landon Andre, Chris Daskam, and Brady Moreau each scored a goal for Belchertown.
Hampshire 10, Chicopee 3 – Summer Duda notched a hat trick for the Raiders on Thursday. With the win, Hampshire improved to 3-0 on the season.
Sam Moran provided secondary scoring for Hampshire with two goals.
Agawam 5, Belchertown 0 – The Belchertown boys tennis team swept Agawam 5-0 on Thursday morning.
The Orioles were led by their No. 2 and No. 3 singles teams of Michael Alves (6-0, 6-0) and Nick Adzima (6-0, 6-0), respectively. No. 1 singles Jack Holt also defeated Dylan Fisk (6-2, 6-4).
In doubles, the No. 1 team of Cal Orzech and Adam Cooper won their match 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 doubles was a Belchertown win via forfeit.
Frontier 3, Sci-Tech 0 – Jesse Kurkulonis recorded a team-high 15 kills and eight aces in a three set win (25-9, 25-20, 25-20) over Sci-Tech. The Redhawks remain undefeated on the season, moving to 6-0 after their win on Thursday.
Setter Tavo Vincent-Warner accumulated 24 assists, and Payton Sladeski led the defense with 13 digs in the back court. Patrick Boyden and Aleks Carey each contributed four kills.
