■Dr. Frank L. Boyden, who for more than half a century has been one of the leading educators in the country, died this morning at his home. He was headmaster of Deerfield Academy from 1902 to 1968.
■A heated meeting of the Open Campus Committee reached the boiling point at times last night as students, parents, teachers and administrators argued over guidelines designed for the program which has been proposed for Northampton High School. Among the most controversial guidelines was one which stated that identification cards be shown at a teacher’s request.
■If Northampton residents decide to renovate the high school, they will have to pass the city’s largest ever override of the property tax-limiting measure known as Proposition 2½. The override bill for paying for the renovation and construction at the Northampton High School could go as high as $6.5 million.
■Sculptor Leonard Baskin says he believes nothing need be added to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial to focus attention on FDR’s struggle with polio. “It’s a memorial to Roosevelt and not to his disability,” said Baskin, of Leeds, whose 30-by 6-foot bronze bas relief depicting FDR’s funeral cortege was installed at the memorial site in February.
■Dr. Ira Helfand’s more than three-decade crusade to rid the world of nuclear weapons took him to Chicago this week, where he unveiled a startling report that finds more than 1 billion people worldwide at risk of starvation related to a limited nuclear war. The Northampton physician presented the report at the 12th World Summit of Nobel Laureates, an annual gathering of Nobel Peace Prize recipients, former presidents, and activists.
■It will be a few more weeks before work begins in earnest on the latest housing development at Village Hill Northampton, but that hasn’t stopped would-be buyers from expressing interest in the 24-home bungalow complex.
