NORTHAMPTON – The Northampton girls track and field team honored its seniors before Tuesday’s meet against Minnechaug, and the Blue Devils got them a win to cap off their senior night. 

Northampton scored a 92-53 victory.

Quincy Biddle started the meet off with a win in the 400 meter hurdles (73.2). Esme Marini-Rapoport and Lily Shimpach went 1-2 in the two mile, crossing the line right after each other in 12:20 and 12:21, respectively. Kaiah Gregory won the 100 dash (13.3), Yelena Caldanaro won the 100 hurdles (17.9), and Evelyn Smith threw the discus 76-10 for first. The Blue Devils also won the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 53.8 seconds. 

Longmeadow 87, Amherst 58 – The Hurricanes dropped a dual meet to Longmeadow 87-58, struggling in the field events but besting the Lancers in both of the relay events. 

The 4×100 relay team of Ruby Austin, Juliana Shepard, Courtengail Rose and Anajisa Robinson won their event with a time of 55.1. The 4×400 team of Eliza Dole, Bevin Montgomery-Gehrt, Tamar Byl-Brann and Maya Tkachenko Coggeshall-Burr won in 4:33.9. 

Robinson also walked away with two individual wins in the 100 meter dash (13.0) and 200 meter dash (26.7). Byl-Brann crossed the finish line first in the two mile in 11:45.2, and Elizabeth Sawicki won the 400 meter hurdles (1:17.9) and finished second in the 100 hurdles (18.9) and the triple jump (28-8.5). 

Tkachenko Coggeshall-Burr took second in the 800 meter run (2:48.6) and Izzy Rich took second in the high jump (4-6). 

Boys track and field 

Minnechaug 101, Northampton 44 – The Blue Devils dropped a dual meet to Minnechaug on the team’s senior night, but had some fun along the way. 

Theodore King-Pollet won the two mile race with a 10:17, and Rowan Hodgson finished second in the 100 meter dash (11.2). 

Riley Cole also won the 1-mile race. 

Softball

Hopkins 20, Mahar 2 — Maggie Potter was 4-for-5 with two doubles, and visiting Hopkins scored five in the top of the first inning and nine in the second en route to a five-inning victory in Orange.

Kaelyn Zakaitis struck out five in the circle for the Golden Hawks.

Westfield Tech 3, Gateway 2 — The Gators led 2-1 into the bottom of the sixth inning before Westfield tied it and then eventually walked off in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 3-2 victory on Tuesday in Westfield.

Ariana Marchese and Alexi Bonenfant had two hits apiece for Gateway, and pitcher Nicole Hannigan struck out seven in a complete-game outing.

Girls lacrosse

South Hadley 18, Chicopee Comp 5 – The Tigers improved to 4-3 in Valley League conference play with a dominant win over Chicopee Comp on Tuesday. 

Emily Piligian, Raquel Losty, and Caitlin Dean each scored a hat trick while Gabi Moroney added a pair of goals and handed out four assists. Kacie Levrault and Ella Marion netted two goals apiece and South Hadley goalie Evelyn Gingras made six saves. 

Agawam 16, Northampton 11 — Sofia Ciaglo found the back of the net four times in the Devils’ loss on Tuesday.

Ellie Mahoney, Chloe Denhart and Eloise Ruberti added two goals apiece, while Denhart and Maddie Nakashian dished out three assists each. Riley Shea stopped 10 shots in net.

Girls tennis

Greenfield 3, Frontier 2 – The Green Wave swept their singles matches against Frontier on Tuesday. 

No. 1 singles Jenna Keith (6-1, 6-3), No. 2 Estera Covalenco (6-2, 6-1) and No. 3 singles Kaitlyn Phillips (6-2, 7-5) all won their matches. 

Frontier’s No. 1 doubles team of Sydney Scanlon and Sam Baker (6-0, 6-0) and No. 2 doubles Chloe Felton-Emrick and Grace O’Leary (6-0, 6-3) both earned wins for the Redhawks. 

Boys tennis

Amherst 5, South Hadley 0 – The Hurricanes won all three matches they played and picked up wins via forfeit in No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles. 

No. 1 singles Zach Richards defeated Sean Whalen 6-3, 6-0 and No. 2 singles Miles Jeffries bested Matthias Lipp 6-0, 6-1. The No. 1 doubles team of Josh Kellogg and Ben Oates earned a win against Xavier Macon and Vincent Calvanese 6-0, 6-0. 

PVCICS 4, SICS 1 – PVCICS’ boys’ tennis team stayed perfect this season, improving to 8-0 against SICS.

The Dragons dropped just their second match of the season in a No. 2 doubles duel between SICS’ Henry Pudlo and Tajour Hoyes-Phillips, and PVICIS’ Patrick Canavan-Gosselin and Asa Taggert. Pudlo and Hoyes-Phillips won the first set 6-3, dropped the second 6-7, and the two went to a 10-point tiebreaker that Pudlo and Hoyes-Phillips managed to win 11-9. 

No. 1 singles Aidan Cleary (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 singles Hugo Shinn (6-1, 6-0) and No. 3 singles James Scott (6-0, 6-0) all won their matches for the Dragons, as did the No. 1 doubles teamof Clayton English and Teddy Scott (6-0, 6-1). 

Northampton 3, Minnechaug 2 — Strong singles play powered the Blue Devils to a road win. Reilly Fowles bested Ayden Alves 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Ethan Metz took down Owen Perry 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

At No. 1 doubles, Northampton’s Max Cahillane and Durrell Patrick prevailed 6-1, 6-4 over Matthew Sherman and Ethan Quill.

Boys volleyball

Holyoke 3, Longmeadow 1 — Jairam Rodriguez controlled the Purple Knights’ 25-13, 25-13, 16-25, 25-9 victory with 16 digs, 15 kills, 11 assists and six aces. Willie Lopez distributed 25 assists with eight kills and three aces for Holyoke.

Holyoke’s Gabriel Inares pulled up 13 digs, while Jomar Colon added 12.

Jeduar Colon put down six kills for the Purple Knights, while Adrian Centero-Felciano (four kills) made two blocks.

Frontier 3, Athol 0 – Jesse Kurkulonis powered down 15 kills with seven digs in a 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 victory that qualified the Redhawks for the state tournament.

Frontier’s Payton Sladeski pulled up 23 digs, while Ngawang Deter added 14 and Patrick Boyden (five kills) contributed 10.

Aleks Carey put down six kills for the Redhawks. Frontier setter Tavo Vincent-Warner distributed 26 assists.

Youth sports

Northampton 8, Easthampton 3 – Greta Lapore struck out 12 to lead Northampton to a 12U softball victory.

Alexa Peters and Ella Dunphy each had two hits and two runs for Northampton. Northampton’s Mia Lindahl and River Castella each added a hit and scored a run.

Easthampton’s Maddy Urban (triple) had two hits, while Teagan Crussana, Edna Cruz, and Vivian Santos each touched home once.
