■A man in England has undertaken to walk backwards 38 miles in 12 hours, for three successive days. The first day he completed 29 miles, and the second 38 miles, in less than 12 hours. The issue of the third day was not known.

■The Northampton polo team put on a good game with mixed teams at the Driving Park last night. The field has been cut and is in excellent condition. Editor Whiting of Holyoke will come to Northampton Monday night to join forces in a game.

■William H. Law of the Pinehurst riding school on Gothic Street is sending six saddle horses to a summer resort near Rutland, Vt., for the summer. He will also supply three different parties spending the summer in the hill towns of the Berkshires with mounts from his stables.

■A total of 200 guests helped inaugurate the new $400,000 rehabilitation center with a gala banquet last night in Florence. The new center, at 190 Nonotuck St., will provide employment for an many as 100 mentally handicapped workers by the end of the year.

■Endeavors to close J. J. Newberry Co. at 171 Main St. have been made, the vice president of real estate for the company confirmed yesterday. The store has been in Northampton four about 14 years. Robert Hertel of New York City said closing is contingent “on a number of things” and is currently in the exploratory stage.
