HOLYOKE — A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Saturday afternoon while trespassing on the tracks, according to law enforcement agencies.
At about 2:30 p.m., Holyoke officers responded to the train tracks near St. Kolbe Drive downtown, police said in a weekend email. The man, whom authorities did not identify, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Holyoke Police spoke with the conductor of the train and secured the area until Amtrak Police arrived to take over the investigation.
Amtrak Police spokeswoman Beth Toll said the train was traveling from St. Albans, Vt., to Washington “when an individual who was trespassing on the track north of (the HLK station) came into contact with the train. There were no reported injuries to the 105 passengers or crew onboard.” The train was delayed for approximately 90 minutes, Toll said.
Amtrak Police said these incidents “serve as critical reminders about the importance of obeying the law and of exercising extreme caution around railroad tracks and crossings.”
