PLAINFIELD — The Select Board has posted a notice of a special meeting on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall, with the sole stated purpose to determine whether to convene an executive session, according to a posted agenda.

Under the state’s Open Meeting Law, there are 10 reasons that a public body can enter into executive session. None were listed on the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting.

“Notice shall be printed in a legible, easily understandable format and shall contain the date, time and place of such meeting and a listing of topics that the chair reasonably anticipates will be discussed at the meeting,” reads part of the Open Meeting Law.

According to guidelines issued by the attorney general’s office, public bodies should include “as much detail about the purpose for the executive session as possible without compromising the purpose for which it is called.”

Before going into executive session, the chairperson must convene a meeting in open session and explain why the body is going into executive session. The chairperson must also inform the public whether the body is going to return to open session.

Plainfield officials could not be reached for comment about the special meeting Tuesday.
