EASTHAMPTON — Two city residents died Tuesday night after being struck by a motor vehicle on Northampton Street.
An 81-year-old man and 60-year-old woman were walking in the area of Burger King at approximately 7:30 p.m. when they were struck by a single vehicle being driven by a South Hadley resident, the Northwestern district attorney’s office said.
The man died at the scene, and the woman was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield at 8 p.m., officials said.
The driver of the vehicle has been “cooperative with the police,” according to district attorney’s spokeswoman Laurie Loisel.
The identities of the man and woman have not been released.
City Council President Homar Gomez said his thoughts and prayers are with the families involved.
In a Facebook post, Councilor Owen Zaret wrote on his councilor’s page that he intends to speak with leadership as to what may be done to improve safety about this particular stretch of road. Zaret serves on the city’s Public Safety Committee.
“My heart is broken for the two lives lost crossing Northampton Street last night. May their memories be a blessing as they remain in our collective thoughts,” he wrote.
Easthampton Police and Massachusetts State troopers are still investigating the incident and will not be releasing additional information at this time, Easthampton Police Detective Andrew Beaulieu said.
In addition to Easthampton police, others responding to the scene included State Police troopers from the Crime Scene Services Section, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the Detective Unit attached to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.
