■Hawley Junior High School students elected Kathy Finn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Finn of 69 Day Ave., student council president in balloting yesterday that also included a mock election. The balloting was arranged by the eighth-grade history students of Joseph Ruckman and Robert Whitman.

■With the election only two days away, neither Sen. George McGovern nor President Richard Nixon could muster much enthusiasm among voters interviewed in downtown Northampton yesterday. Only a handful indicated whole-hearted support for the candidates.

■A challenger who appeared to be running a marginal campaign on a shoe-string budget had reason to celebrate last night. When all was counted, Roy C. Martin, challenging Mayor Mary L. Ford, ended up with 1,852 votes — and 32% of the ballots cast for mayor.

■Incumbent James M. Dostal garnered the most votes in the race yesterday for two at-large seats on the School Committee, but newcomer Karen Bercovici handily beat out the other incumbent, Jay S. Fleitman, for the other.

■A high-stakes election for the White House and the U.S. Senate kept area voters energized and talking over the weekend, including many Valley residents who continued to campaign for candidates — on the phone and on the streets. Many voters said they were working hard to get out the vote in the days leading up to Election Day on Tuesday.

■An Amherst doctor specializing in skin care and other aesthetic medicine will relocate his practice to the former Silverscape Designs building at 264 North Pleasant St. early next year. Dr. Robert Weitzman said he recently purchased the large yellow Victorian building, adjacent to Kendrick Park, with the intent of better serving his growing number of patients.
