Abigail Gelinas and Emma Sanford won two events apiece, and the South Hadley girls indoor track and field team made an impressive opening statement for the 2022-23 season at PVIAC Meet No. 1 on Sunday at Wheaton College in Norton.

Sanford won the high jump (4 feet, 11 inches) and 55-meter hurdles (8.77 seconds) as the Tigers competed in the afternoon session of the event on Sunday. Gelinas was victorious in the 55-meter dash (7.86) and 300 meters (45.21).

Sanford added a fourth-place finish in the shot put (32-6.25), and Gelinas took fourth in the long jump (13-10).

South Hadley’s Izzy Scott added an individual victory in the 1-mile, as she crossed with a winning time of 6:11.

Frontier’s Leah Gump won the 2-mile (13:26), with teammate Sasha Malo taking fourth in the event.

Frontier won the 4×400 relay in addition to a plethora of top five finishes. Caroline Crocker was second in the long jump (15-5) and second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.94), while Abigail Howard took second in the high jump (4-9). Claire McFarland was the runner-up in the 600 meters with a time of 1:55.57.

Other top five finishers for the Redhawks were Summer Sobieski (fourth, high jump), Anna Petrin (fifth, high jump), Hannah Davis (fifth, high jump and fourth, 55 hurdles), Gump (fourth, 1-mile), Maia Christensen (fifth, 1-mile), Howard (fourth, 600) and Nicole Plasse (fourth, 300).

South Hadley’s Gwen Marion took fifth in the 600 and teammate Rachel Yabra was fifth in the 300.

On the boys side, Frontier eighth grader Evan Hedlund had an impressive debut showing with a second-place finish in the 2-mile (10:49.79) to go with a fifth-place showing in the 600 (1:40.63).

Teammate Aidan Valderrama was the runner-up in the 1,000 meters (3:05.03).

Blue Devils strong in early meet

Northampton’s Norah Reade and Camilla Brewer each captured individual victories on Sunday, guiding the Blue Devils to an impressive performance during the early portion of PVIAC Meet No. 1 at Wheaton College.

Brewer was first across the line in the 55-meter hurdles for Northampton, posting a winning time of 10.13 seconds. Hampshire Regional’s Ava Gaida took second in 10.62. Reade won the 1-mile with a time of 5 minutes, 38.02 seconds. Hampshire’s Keegan Butler finished fifth (6:25.19).

Brewer finished with a trio of top five finishes, posting a third place showing in the long jump (13 feet, 7 inches) and a fifth-place finish in the 55 meter dash (8.10 seconds).

Northampton won the 4×400 relay with a dominant time of 4:41.78, while Hampshire was second in 5:02.02.

Northampton’s Ella Hendricks (second, 23-6.5) and Allyson Busone (fourth, 22-7) were top five finishers in the shot put, while Holyoke’s Francesca Crescentini took fifth (22-0.5).

In the 2-mile, Hampshire eighth grader Kathleen Barry ran to a runner-up finish with a time of 12:42.32. Northampton’s Lily Zamer (third, 12:49), Tess Geis-Benton (fourth, 12:49.17) and Mia Jones (fifth, 14:31.72) rounded out the top five.

Kira French gave the Blue Devils a runner-up showing in the 600 meters (1:55.12), with Hampshire’s Natalie Dunlap finishing third in 2:01.70. Northampton’s Lila Hensley (fourth, 2:02.58) and Barry (fifth, 2:032.24) also nabbed top five showings.

Holyoke’s Jaylene Moquin finished fourth in the 300 meters (47.69).

Zamer was the runner-up in the 1,000 meters for Northampton (3:28.18), with teammate Taylor Lynch in third (3:40.25) and Dunlap fifth for the Raiders (3:48.70).

On the boys side, Northampton’s Davis Wheat and Mesfin McManamy both won events to kick off the 2022-23 season.

Wheat was first across the line in the 1-mile (4:57.79) and McManamy was victorious in the 600 meters (1:35.27).

Behind Wheat in the 1-mile, Holyoke’s Elijah Quinn was third overall (5:10.48) and Hampshire’s Nicholas Elias-Gillette was fifth (5:14.18). Hampshire’s Spencer Reese took third in the 600 (1:38.15).

The boys 2-mile was full of top local performers. Theodore King-Pollet was the runner-up with a time of 10:21.69, followed by a trio of Hampshire Regional runners in Gavin DaFonte (third, 10:57.60), Tim Cahill (fourth, 11:34.96) and Zach Jones (fifth, 11:39.50).

Northampton’s Juan Jose Adams Causton was the runner-up in the 300 meters wit h a time of 40.00 seconds and added a fourth-place showing in the long jump (17-1.5), and teammate Rowan Hodgson was third in the 55-meter dash (7.12).

Other top five finishers in Sunday’s early meet included Northampton’s Ryland Breen (second, 55-meter hurdles), Hampshire’s Tim Cahill (second, 1,000 meters) and Northampton’s Liam Ewers (fifth, 1,000 meters).

The season continues next Sunday (Dec. 18) when Smith College in Northampton will host PVIAC Meet No. 2.
