Amherst should continue to support the Jones Library building project that voters endorsed in November 2021. The 2012 report by Anna Popp does not represent a Plan B alternative as it does not address issues of needed repairs to the atrium and mechanical systems, ADA compliance needs, sustainability, and, yes, additional space to continue literacy and ESL programs and provide adequate rooms for both young children and teens. Indeed, it was not even intended to be a forward looking plan for the Jones; it was designed to address immediate needs as they were present 10 years ago.

Yes, the bottom line cost is increasing for the renovation and expansion, just as it is also increasing for repairs that will be needed even if the renovation and expansion does not go forward. But now is not the time to step away from the plan for a library that will serve all Amherst residents while providing an energy efficient building. The town has made clear that its dollar commitment will not increase, so that the increase will have to be covered by fundraising. The Jones Library Capital Campaign Leadership group is taking on that responsibility, working tirelessly to raise sufficient funds. Let’s give them the chance to show that Amherst can move forward with a 21st century Jones Library that can be a centerpiece of Amherst. Now is the time to support the building project and capital campaign, not back away.
