Another week, another dominant performance from Emma Sanford.

The South Hadley senior won three events during the late session of PVIAC Indoor Track Meet No. 2 on Sunday at Smith College in Northampton.

Sanford’s performance paced an impressive day indoors for the Hampshire County contingent. She took first place in the long jump (16 feet, 8.5 inches), high jump (5-2) and 55-meter hurdles (8.89 seconds).

Amherst junior David Pinero-Jacome won a pair of distance events as the Hurricanes put together a strong team performance on Sunday. Pinero-Jacome was the winner in both the 1-mile (4:49.27) and 1,000 meters (2:49).

Freshman Owen Platt’s impressive run in the 600 meters led to an individual victory, as Platt bested the field for the ’Canes with a time of 1:34.36. Teammate Logan Alfandari also won the shot put with a top heave of 41-7.25.

Inigo de los Reyes finished second in the 300 meters for Amherst (38.86 seconds), while other podium finishers on the boys side included Diego Lopez (fourth, 1-mile), Kyle Yanko (fifth, 1-mile), Andrew Cruz (sixth, shot put), Patrick Staudenmayer (sixth, 600) and Alden Pope (sixth, 1,000).

The Amherst girls also had an individual event winner in senior Tamar Byl-Brann, who won the 2-mile with a time of 11:49.13. Classmate April Schilling was third in the event in 12:43.46, while teammate Bevin Montgomery-Gehrt nabbed third in the 1-mile (6:13.47) and Brooklyn Court finished sixth in the long jump (13-6.25).

The Northampton girls’ team had a trio of individual winners during Sunday’s late session.

Senior Anna Zamer was victorious in the 1-mile, crossing in 6:01.76. Teammate Norah Reade captured the win in the 1,000 meters (3:32.94), and fellow senior Kira French bested the field in the 600 (1:53.80).        

Tess Geis-Benton (1-mile, 6:06) and Eleanor Lewis (high jump, 4-8) were runner-up finishers for the Blue Devils in their respective events, while sophomore Camilla Brewer posted three top-five showings in the 55 hurdles (third), high jump (fourth) and long jump (fifth).

Other podium finishers for the Northampton girls were Lily Zamer (fourth, 2-mile), Charlotte Shimpach (fifth, 2-mile), Taylor Lynch (fifth, 1,000), Allie Sullivan (sixth, 55), Ella Hendricks (sixth, shot put) and Ella Hoogendyk (sixth, 600).

Theodore King-Pollet gave the Northampton boys an individual winner, as the junior won the 2-mile with a time of 10:54.35.

Jake Mourad was second in the 1,000 meters (2:54.70) and third in the 2-mile (11:44) for the Devils, while Jake Fein nabbed runner-up honors in the 600 (1:35.60). Rowan Hodgson (fourth, 55) and Jack Sullivan (fifth, shot put) also had solid outings for ’Hamp.

South Hadley’s Abigail Gelinas was the runner-up in the 55 meters (7.86) and 300 (45.01), while Izzy Scott nabbed second in the 1,000 meters (3:35.14) and fourth in the 1-mile (6:14.42).

Other top performers for the Tigers included Rachel Yabra (fourth, 600), Lexie Scott (fourth, shot put), Emma Levrault (fifth, shot put) and Gwen Marion (sixth, 1,000).

Early meet

Thanks to victories from Hannah Davis (55-meter hurdles) and Lilly Novak (shot put), the Frontier girls team notched a pair of victories in the early portion of the meet on Sunday.

Davis won the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.92 seconds, and Novak took the shot put win with a top heave of 27-4.

Frontier had a plethora of top performances on the day. Summer Sobieski was second in the high jump (4-10) and fourth in the 55 hurdles (10.44), while Micky McCarthy was the runner-up in the shot put (26-5) to give Frontier a 1-2 finish.

Sophia Leone (third, 55 hurdles and sixth, 55), Nicole Plasse (fifth, 300), Abigail Howard (third, 600), Claire McFarland (fourth, 600), Leah Gump (third, 1-mile and second, 2-mile) and Sasha Malo (third, 2-mile) were other top-5 performers. The 4×200 relay team of Leone, Plasse, Abbigayle Grover and McFarland took third.

Hampshire’s Keegan Butler (fifth, 2-mile and third, 1,000), Kathleen Barry (second, 1-mile and fourth, 1,000) and Natalie Dunlap (fifth, 1,000) had top five showings for their side.

On the boys side, eighth grader Evan Hedlund was fourth in the 2-mile (11:13) and Ben Cachiguango was third in the 55 hurdles (9.62). Hampshire’s Zach Jones (fifth, 2-mile), Gavin DaFonte (fourth, 1-mile), Spencer Reese (third, 600), Nicholas Elias-Gillette (third, 1,000) and Tim Cahill (fourth, 1,000) also notched top five showings.

Girls basketball

Easthampton 55, Nauset 39 – The visiting Eagles improved to 4-0 on the season thanks to a dominant fourth quarter, as they outscored Nauset by a 17-3 edge over the final eight minutes to secure the independent win on Saturday.

Maria Belfakih (19 points) and Laur en Morse (18) were the big offensive performers for Easthampton, which led 28-27 at halftime and 38-36 after three quarters. Kayley Downie tossed in 9 points.

Boys basketball

South Hadley 70, Granby 45 – Chase Mathers poured in a game-high 21 points as the Tigers rolled on Saturday.

Colin Quinn went for 18 points in the victory, while Eddie Wykowski added 15 points to  make it three South Hadley scorers in double figures.

Granby’s Robert L’Abbee paced his side with 10 points, followed by Riley Goodhind with 9.

Swam pscott 64, Bel chertown 57 – A furious fourth-quarter comeback fell just short as the Orioles outscored Swampscott 29-19 in the final stanza.

Tyler McDonald’s 19 points topped the Belchertown scoresheet, followed by Topher Pacunas with 12.

Hockey

Belchertown 2, Greenfield 1 – Goals from Ryan Fernandes and Charlie Fijal propelled the Orioles to a key early-season Wright Division victory on Saturday at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

James Delaney and Jack Mandeville picked up assists for Belchertown, which received 29 saves from goalie Curtis Wejnas.

Eathon Bryant tallied for the Green Wave, with goalie Josh Bordeaux making 27 saves in net.

Easthampton 8, McCann 0 – Zach Roy netted four goals, as the Eagles rolled to a Wright Division victory on Saturday.

Mikey Thompson added two goals for Easthampton, which won its first game of the season to move to 1-2. Rob Herman and Ethan Marowitz also tallied for the Eagles, which scored five times in the second period to blow it open. Goalie Paige Galpin recorded the shutout in net for Easthampton.

Minnechaug 3, Amherst 1 – Cooper Beckwith notched the goal for the Hurricanes in the first period, but visiting Minnechaug did all its damage in the opening stanza to nab the 3-1 win at Orr Rink on Saturday.

Grahm Arguin and Noah Parelli assisted on Beckwith’s goal.

Ludlow 7, South Hadley 3 – Caleb Lundgren scored twice for the Tigers, while Nick Hartley assisted on two of the South Hadley tallies. Goalie Devin Carleton made 23 saves.

Wrestling

Nighthawk Classic

Frontier took 11th and Northampton finished 12th as a team to pace the local pack  at the NightHawk Classic at Holyoke High School on Saturday.

Host Holyoke finished 13th while Gateway (14th), Hampshire (15th), Granby (16th) and South Hadley (17th) rounded out the local sides. Taunton won the team title.

Frontier’s Jake Mattson captured the individual title at 195 pounds, while Quane Randall was the runner-up at 285 for Northampton and Hampshire’s Alex Willard nabbed second place at 152.

Williston results

It was a monster weekend for the Williston Northampton girls hockey team, as the Wildcats captured the 41st Harrington Tournament title on Sunday thanks to a 4-1 win over host Milton Academy in the championship game.

Goals from Ava DeCoste, Emily Hamann and two from Monique Lyons propelled the Wildcats in the final, and goalie Jenna Guglielmi came up big in net.

In the semifinal round earlier on Sunday, Williston edged Nobles, 2-1, with goals from Lyons and Emily Crovo. Liv Ferebee was outstanding between the pipes. Lyons also tallied both goals and Ferebee earned the win in net during a quarterfinal win over BB&N on Saturday.

In other action, the Williston boys basketball team beat Phillips Exeter, 69-42, on the final day of the Seacoast Challenge on Saturday. The girls basketball team took down Berkshire, 43-32, in the Ray Brown Tournament thanks to 14 points from Kristen Trembley and nine from Skyler Walker.
