The Brickhouse Road tree clear-cut in Cummington seems criminal to me. Finger pointing between town officials, Eversource, and Lewis Tree Service to create a sense that it was miscommunication and a comedy of errors shouldn’t be accepted. Someone decided to subvert the tree-huggers and get it done quickly and without community knowledge. Ten foot saplings as replacement is a joke. Sugar maples from nurseries that are much older and larger are only the beginning of restitution. It mystifies me how someone could look at that line of old maples and say “Let’s cut these nuisance trees down so that the electrical wire can breathe free.” It probably would have been cheaper to dig a half-mile trench and run the cables underground.
