It was a strong weekend for the Northampton and Amherst indoor track and field teams, as they were among the schools to compete in the 54th Annual John Kalperis MSTCA State Relays in Boston.
The Amherst boys’ 4×800 relay team captured the top spot in the Division 3 event on Sunday, as the quartet posted a winning time of 8 minutes, 21.82 seconds. The Hurricanes built an early lead and extended it to 30 meters midway through the second leg of the race, before Burlington took the lead and held it until the final turn of the final leg. That’s when Amherst kicked it into overdrive, rallying back to secure the win by just 0.40 seconds.
The Hurricanes’ 4×400 team finished third overall (3:36) on the boys’ side, while the girls’ placed fifth in the distance relay (13:33.30).
Alfrandari Logan was third in the boys’ shot put to help the Hurricanes to a ninth-place team finish overall (16 points). The girls’ team took 22nd.
Northampton competed in the Division 4 meet on Friday, with the Blue Devils girls finishing 12th as a team and the boys team nabbing 11th.
The girls high jump relay team of sophomores Eleanor Lewis and Camilla Brewer, and freshman Allie Sullivan placed third, while the 4×800 relay squad of Tess Geis-Benton, Anna Zamer, Lily Zamer and Norah Reade punched their ticket to the MIAA D4 state championship meet thanks to a fifth-place showing.
The boys team took third in the distance medley (11:22.47), while the 1,600 sprint medley nabbed a fourth-place finish (3:50.54).
