It was a consistent start to the MIAA Division 3 state tournament for the Amherst girls volleyball team.

The fourth-seeded Hurricanes won all three sets of their Round of 32 match by the same margin, dispatching No. 29 Blackstone Valley Tech in a 3-0 sweep โ€” 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 โ€” on Friday night Amherst.

Amherst (17-4) will host No. 13 Danvers in a Round of 16 match on Monday at 5:30 p.m. Danvers held off Arlington Catholic in a five-setter Friday to earn a date with the โ€™Canes.

Lauren Joy paced the Hurricanes with 12 kills, while Shannon Klaesย and Sophie Kawall each put down five kills in the win. Annabel Ogden dished out 20 assists and Liza Beigel paced the defensive effort with 23 digs. Abigail Como also went for 11 digs, four assistsย and three aces.

Div. 4 Round of 32

Frontier 3, Saint Paul Diocesan 0 โ€” The third-seeded Redhawks didn’t mess around at Goodnow Gymnasium on Friday, cruising into the Round of 16 with a 25-6, 25-12, 25-18 sweep over No. 30 Saint Paul Diocesan.ย 

Frontier (18-5) advanced to face No. 19 Lowell Catholic on Monday at 6 p.m.

Caroline Deane finished with 13 kills and two assists, Allie Pierce dished 18 assists and added six aces, Gabby Adams tallied five kills and two aces while Kate DeMaio put down four kills and three aces for the Redhawks.ย 

Div. 5 Round of 32

No. 7 Whitinsville Christian 3,ย No. 26 Smith Voc 0 โ€” The Vikings were unable to pull off the upset on the road, falling to the Crusades in three sets.ย 

Whitinsville moves on to host No. 10 Lenox in the Round of 16. Smith Vocational closed out its season with a 10-10 record.ย

Div. 3 Round of 32

No. 7 Gloucester 7,ย No. 26 Belchertown 0 โ€” The Fishermen exploded for seven goals to knock off the Orioles in the Round of 32 on Friday in Gloucester.ย 

Gloucester will host No. 10 East Longmeadow in the Round of 32. Belchertown finished its season with a 11-6-1 record.ย 

Div. 4 Round of 32

No. 12 Frontier 1, No. 21 Westport 0 โ€” An early goal from Kate Walker was enough for the Redhawks to join Greenfield in the Round of 16.

ย Walker tallied a first-quarter goal with an assist from Claire Kirkendall, and 12th-seeded Frontier advanced via a 1-0 win over No. 21 Westport on Friday in South Deerfield.

Frontier will travel to play at No. 5 Joseph Case on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

โ€œIt was a hard fought battle between two teams,ย ย โ€ Frontier coach Missy Mahar said. โ€œMomentum shifted often during the game. I was happy to see the players stay grounded and pull through when Westport was pressuring them.โ€

Frontier held a 7-3 edge in shots, and a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners on Friday. Goalie Kyra Richards turned away all three shots she faced for the shutout.

โ€œDelaney Fifield make a huge ย save at the goal line in the fourth that could have been a game changer,โ€ Mahar offered.
