■The board of directors at Northampton National Bank has announced the following promotions: James A. Stearns to senior vice president, Edward A. Morin to cashier, and Dorothy Donahue to assistant vice president.

■Deputy Police Chief Donald N. Maia has been appointed Amherst’s new chief, Town Manager Allen Torrey announced this morning. Maia, 38, will succeed retiring chief Francis E. Hart, 65, who served on the Amherst police force for 38 years.

■Workers this week are installing a copper roof on the fire station that Northampton is having built on King Street. Work on the $5 million station is ahead of schedule and it is expected to open in May or June, Fire Chief Brian Duggan told city councilors this week.

■Elms College has its first class of men, and reports indicate they are a welcome presence. But the move to coed education apparently hasn’t done the intended trick: to increase enrollment. Thirty-six men are now on campus, but enrollment is still down slightly from last year.

■Initial results of the state’s new educator evaluation system show the vast majority of Massachusetts teachers and administrators reviewed — including those in the Pioneer Valley — are performing well. Results released Thursday by the state show 85.2% of teachers and administrators evaluated last year in 213 state “Race to the Top” districts were rated proficient, and another 7.4% rated exemplary.

■Across the state, 100 organizations met Thursday’s application deadline to open medical marijuana facilities in the commonwealth. Voters last year allowed the registration of up to 35 nonprofit medical marijuana dispensaries across the state — with one to five dispensaries in each of the commonwealth’s 14 counties.
