200 Years Ago

■Joseph Fenno has opened a new grocery and flour store in the southeast room of Curtis’ Hotel in Northampton. He has received and offers for sale a general assortment of groceries, such as liquors, teas, spices, fruit, loaf and brown sugars, molasses, mackerel, codfish, snuff and tobacco, lamp oil, powder, shot, window glass, nails, etc.

■Oliver W. Norton and Almon B. Ludden of Westhampton notify those indebted to either of them that after the tenth of June, they may call at the office of Wm. Bowdoin, Esq., at South Hadley Canal, where they will find their notes and accounts left for collection. A word to the wise is sufficient.

100 Years Ago

■The 35th anniversary of the founding of the Northampton Cooperative bank was observed last night with a banquet at Boyden’s which was attended by a large party of Northampton bankers who came as guests of the bank. “Success” was the watchword of the meeting — success in carrying on the work of the institution through times which were at first troublous and later none too calm, and success in keeping linked in friendship with the other banking houses of the city.

■Members of the Northampton Lodge of Elks, driving 25 automobiles and two buses, provided an outing trip for 91 patients of the veterans’ hospital and 19 patients of the Hampshire County Sanatorium this afternoon. The trip was made through Holyoke, South Hadley, the Notch, Amherst, Sunderland, South Deerfield, and Hatfield.

50 Years Ago

■By a vote of 16 to 9, the state Senate last week advanced a bill which would establish an advisory referendum on whether to legalize the sale of marijuana. Sen. John Olver, D-Amherst, voted for the proposed referendum question.

■Patrolman Ronald A. Wichowski, of 400 North Farms Road, is leaving the Northampton Police Department. Wichowski, a 12-year veteran of the force, is resigning to take a position in the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department.
