The Amherst girls swimming team picked up its fourth win in a row in its 133-39 victory against Easthampton on Tuesday at the Amherst Middle School pool.
Hurricanes head coach Denise Leckenby was happy to see some of her swimmers excel in events they don’t normally compete in.
“I think Emory Albertson’s 500 free and Sadie Cyr’s 500 free were excellent,” Leckenby said. “Lewin Halasz, his 200 IM was fantastic, so we’ve been seeing all their time in the water paying off and we’re excited about it.”
Other standouts for Amherst, which moves to 5-2, were Morgan Seo in the 100 free and Rowan Albertson in the 200 IM, per assistant coach Jane Denenberg. Rowan Albertson qualified for the state meet with her performance on Tuesday.
“It felt really good,” Rowan Albertson said. “I haven’t swam it in like two years. It was really fun.
“While I was swimming the 200 IM, I was in lane 1, so I got to see my whole team right beside, which was great,” Rowan Albertson said.
The boys team also came up victorious for the Hurricanes, winning by a score of 104-5.
Next up, Amherst will host Springfield Central on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Northampton’s Keller Ma honey took second place during the boys varsi ty race in the second PVIAC ski meet on Tuesday at Berkshire East Mountain Resort.
Mahoney finished in 45.98 seconds, which trailed Minnechaug’s Ted Holt by a bit more than one second. Jasper Tuck (59.83) was the second Blue Devil to cross the finish.
Hampshire’s top two consisted of Isaac Stith (47.24) and and Colton Duda (47.94), who earned fourth and fifth place overall.
James Janssen was the first finisher for PVCICS, reaching the end of the course in 56.84 for 13th place. Julian Park was next for the Dragons in 1:04.90.
Amherst’s top two were Finn Zaklanovic (20th, 1:00.72) and Wes Dunford (25th, 1:02.59).
In the girls varsity race, Hampshire’s Ella Cleary and Brooke Hockenberry were the best local finishers, earning eighth and ninth place. Cleary cleared the finish in 34.22 seconds, while Hockenberry had a time of 34.54 seconds.
Amelia Morse took home 11th for Amherst with a time of 34.85. Maya Philips (40.13) was next for the Hurricanes.
PVCICS had two skiers in the top-25 in Sarah Fardal and Luo Yi Zhang. Fardal finished in 13th in 35.26 while Zhang grabbed 25th in 38.42.
Simone Pagar and Giselle Ohm led Northampton with 29th and 30th-place finishes. Pagar recorded a time of 39.21 and Ohm crossed in 39.29.
Smith Voc 69, Ludlow 53 – The Vikings got a pair of double-doubles from Harrison Robert and Joshua Cole in the victory. Robert collected 12 points and 10 rebounds while Cole managed 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Domeniq Sanchez netted 31 points for Smith Voc (6-3), including five 3-pointers, as its top point-getter.
The Vikings were up 31-14 at halftime, before the Lions clawed back, highlighted by a 21-point fourth quarter.
Jackson Mateus’ 22 points paced Ludlow.
Pioneer 75, Hopkins 25 – Twenty points from Brayden Thayer helped the Panthers stay undefeated. Thayer sank four 3-pointers to move Pioneer Valley to 9-0.
Logan Bye scored eight points while Eric Cruz-Perez added seven points in the Golden Hawks’ loss to the Panthers in Hadley Tuesday.
Smith Academy 50, Hampshire 22 – Smith Academy logged its fifth consecutive win on Tuesday, thanks to strong games from its seniors. Ryan McCoy and Garrett Willard had 11 points, while Cameron Graves garnered 10 points for the Falcons (7-2).
Braylon Jarrett had eight points as Hampshire’s top-scorer, which falls to 5-4 on the season.
Drury 59, Frontier 47 — The Blue Devils pulled ahead 27-17 at the half to earn a Hampshire League South victory over the visiting Redhawks in North Adams Tuesday.
Max Millette tossed in 17 points, Alex Ellis recorded 10 points while Ty Skroski, Garrett Dredge and Rowan Modestow each scored six points in the loss for Frontier.
Girls basketball
Smith Academy 64, Duggan 49 (OT) — Monday night’s game between the Falcons and Jayhawks was tied at 49 going into overtime, and Smith Academy erupted for a 15-0, game-ending run to bring home the road victory.
After trailing by 11 entering the fourth quarter, the Falcons stormed from behind to knot things up and force an extra session. Alexa Jagodzinski poured in a game-high 24 points while Caitlin Graves added a baker’s dozen (13) of her own to pace Smith Academy.
