■A home-care corporation designed to provide services for the elderly will be formed for the Northampton-Westfield area, state Sen. John W. Olver said today. Home-care corporations are non-profit organizations that provide such services as transportation, homemaker, and home health aid and nutrition programs.
■Albert E. Lumley’s lilacs are putting on their perennial spring display on Harkness Road in Pelham, and Lumley reports that two years from now lilac-fanciers from around the world will be coming to see his collection. The International Lilac Society has decided to hold its spring meeting in Amherst in 1977. Lumley owns the world’s largest private collection of lilacs which have been raised on their own roots.
■After a national search, an independent think tank focused on gay and lesbian issues has picked a local activist to take it to the next level. Stacy L. Roth will soon leave her job as associate director of the Northampton-based National Priorities Project to become the first full-time and first paid executive director of the Institute for Gay and Lesbian Strategic Studies.
■Channing L. Bete, the prolific publisher that produces millions of educational pamphlets annually, announced that it will be reducing its workforce “within the next several weeks.” Company President Michael G. Bete announced that the company is being forced to reduce its workforce of 350 because of “ongoing turmoil in America’s health care system,” which is a primary market for Channing Bette products.
■The Northampton YouthWorks program again will provide summer jobs to 25 eligible youths between the ages of 14 and 21. This is the fourth year of the state program aimed at reducing teen unemployment.
■Standing in front of the new counter that offers Registry of Motor Vehicles services at the Pioneer Valley AAA office in Hadley, Gov. Charles Baker emphasized Thursday that continued partnerships between state offices and private businesses benefit Massachusetts residents. The new registry services began at the AA office in the Campus Shopping Plaza on May 11.
