■Chanting “Dukakis should be on welfare,” a group of some 40 welfare recipients and others picketed the state welfare office in Northampton yesterday. The demonstration was intended to dramatize the complaints of protestors who say that the state is unfairly cutting back in welfare and human services spending.
■Slattery’s Inn is planning to construct a one-room cocktail lounge at the rear of 92 Main St., Florence, and has requested a change in its liquor license from an inn holder’s all-alcoholic license to a common victualer’s all-alcoholic on the premise’s license. “The sole reason for our application is the destruction by fire in February of the premises,” said Robert Doyle Jr., attorney for Slattery’s Inn, Inc.
■Covering the macro and the micro, the history of global finance and personal banking, six students from Northampton High School tested their economic might last week in a Boston contest sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank. When all was said and done, the NHS team placed fourth in a field of 10 schools, and junior John Abrashkin placed second in the individual competition, said Mark Baldwin, a social studies teacher who led the local team.
■The manager of Northampton’s Salvation Army store found more than used clothes at a drop-off site last week, but didn’t appreciate the donation. Strewn around the collection bins behind the store on Service Center Road were the remains of an old car, including a gas tank, muffler, struts, springs, brakes and a rotor.
■Easthampton High School principal Vito Perrone will leave his position at the end of the school year to become the new principal at West Springfield High School. “It’s really an amazing opportunity for me professionally,” Perrone said Monday. “But also personally, for my family it was the right decision at the time.”
■Doctoral candidate and college instructor Lauren Rollins, of Florence, has announced her candidacy for an at-large seat on the Northampton School Committee. Rollins, 35, is in her last year of obtaining a doctorate in English literature at the University of Massachusetts.
