A consultant’s report released yesterday recommends that the city either mount a major marketing effort to sell industrial land in the moribund Northampton Industrial Park or abandon the project and sell the land to the highest bidder.

All 20 communities in Hampshire County have established Bicentennial committees to plan projects and events over the next year to celebrate the nation’s 200th birthday. Most communities are planning a combination of historical and recreational projects, and events such as balls, fairs, and gala festivals, beginning this summer and continuing through 1976.

Northampton High School Principal Diane Stone is discontinuing a popular class that gave credit to 50 students last year for volunteering in the community — so she can build a new type of community service program at the school, one with closer ties to academic programs. The class, called Community Service Learning, had a waiting list both semesters this past year, according to its teacher, Diane Dostal.

Among a certain set, the event of the week will be the release of the fourth Harry Potter book by J.K. Rowling. With Harry Potter release celebration parties planned for bookstores around the region, Northampton is no exception. The Space-Crime Continuum, a King Street store, will open at 12:01, July 8, to sell copies of the book for anyone who just can’t wait another second.

A document that will guide an architect in developing plans for an expanded and renovated Jones Library has been adopted by the library’s trustees. The trustees on Thursday voted to approve the building program. “For all of us, this is a very exciting moment,” said board of trustees president Austin Sarat.

As he nears the end of his fifth year as Amherst town manager, John Musante will take part in a three-week professional development program at Harvard University that he expects will improve his leadership abilities. Musante will join several dozen other officials from across the United States and around the world at the Kennedy School’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program.
