SOUTH HADLEY — Massachusetts State Police apprehended a South Hadley man on Monday night after he fled from police in a vehicle and crashed into another vehicle on the Joseph E. Muller Bridge.
The man is currently in the hospital, recovering from injuries sustained in the crash. According to a statement from Trooper Leah O’Connell, the man is facing several charges, including reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of personal injury, resisting arrest, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and suspended registration.
On Monday at 5:18 p.m., troopers in Northampton attempted to stop a vehicle whose registered owner had an outstanding warrant, according to O’Connell. The insurance of the vehicle had also been cancelled.
The man allegedly drove away at high speeds, eventually crashing in a head-on collision with another vehicle on Muller Bridge. O’Connell did not say if any person involved in the collision was injured besides the vehicle operator.
Police claim that the two people in the speeding vehicle tried to escape on foot. Five police officers and seven state troopers then pursued and apprehended them. South Hadley police officers were directing traffic around the bridge, which closed down following the crash, according to Police Chief Jennifer Gunderson.
The vehicle operator will be arraigned in Holyoke District Court after his release from the hospital.
