
A vivid oil painting by the late artist from Conway, Lester Stevens, is now on exhibit at the Nonotuck Savings Bank. The painting depicts a covered bridge against the autumn foliage in the New England foothills. Stevens’ wife, Angela, is donating the painting to the Laurel Park Association for the drawing at its annual fair in August. The proceeds will go towards making improvements in the park.
A judge in Northampton District Court today told a defendant that he would let him go without a fine or a finding stemming from a charge of driving under influence of alcohol because the defendant was joining the Marines. The judge told the defendant, “I guess you’re in luck. Both the judge, and your arresting officer are ex-Marines.”
Nicky D’s, a 22-year-old mom-and-pop used car and auto-refinishing business that has been operating on Route 10 in Easthampton for the past seven years, opened a small satellite store at 144 King St. in Northampton in May.
Area schools are now $300,000 closer to a multi-million dollar performing arts center for use by all public school students, thanks to an anonymous donation. The gift is the largest to date toward the $10 million project, which was announced last year by the Pioneer Valley Arts in Education Foundation.
A lawsuit against the Amherst-Pelham Regional School District filed by a former teacher who was allegedly subjected to repeated racially threatening attacks has been resolved. The settlement of the suit on behalf of Carolyn Gardner was announced Wednesday by her attorneys but the terms of the resolution are being kept confidential.
Lia Kia has permanently closed its Northampton dealership. A company spokeswoman said in an email that the dealership at 263 King St. is closed, and that Kia is now studying the market to ensure that area customers’ sales and service needs are met. Lia Kia in Northampton opened in August 2013.
