The Northampton Conservation Commission last night gave initial approval to a proposal for opening the Leeds Reservoir for fishing. Paul Cuddy, president of the Hampshire County Council of Sportsmen, said his organization is seeking to have the reservoir open for fishing primarily because there is no place in Northampton where young people can fish in midsummer.
Nancy Murphy of 76 North Elm St. has been appointed associate chairman of the towns and residences division of the 1976 Hampshire United Way campaign, the drive chairman Patricia Olmsted announced today. Mrs. Murphy will work with Barbara King, who is coordinating the United Way residential solicitation.

Members of the New England Chapter of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers, composed of retired officers and other intelligence enthusiasts, gathered at the Hotel Northampton Saturday to hear former CIA agent Antonio J. Mendez, who has written a memoir “The Master of Disguise — My Secret Life in the CIA,” about his 25 years of undercover work in the agency. The event attracted a standing-room only crowd.
Students in some Northampton High School science courses will need to swap classrooms to perform chemistry experiments after they move into the renovated science wing this fall, according to the school’s principal, Diane Stone. She expects the inconvenience to last only one year, the result of a bulge in chemistry enrollment and the limited number of suitably equipped science classrooms included in the renovation project.

Duane Nichols will become Northampton’s new fire chief when he is sworn in next week. His selection was unanimously approved by the City Council Monday. Nichols, a 28-year-member of the Fire Department, will succeed Brian Duggan, who announced his retirement in April after 17 years in the position.
A possible breach of personal information through the town of Amherst’s website in June prompted town officials last week to send letters to some residents notifying them of the issue and offering reimbursement to individuals who enroll in a credit monitoring service.
